Open Enrollment Period
It’s back, in 2019 the Open Enrollment period is coming back and the Medicare Advantage Disenrollment Period is gone. The new Open Enrollment Period is not to be confused with the Annual Enrollment Period (AEP). The AEP runs from October 15th through December 7th of every year.
During the Open Enrollment period, the following applies:
- Runs annually from January 1st through March 31st
- You may make a one time change into another Medicare Advantage plan
- You may also drop a Medicare Advantage plan and return to Original Medicare
- If you return to Original Medicare, you may enroll into a Part D drug plan
- When you enroll in a new plan, that plan will start on the 1st of the immediately following month
If you have Original Medicare and a Part D plan, you may not switch to a different Part D plan until the next AEP.
If you have Original Medicare and a Medicare Supplement Plan, this does not affect you.
This new enrollment period essentially gives you more time to make sure that the Medicare Advantage plan you chose is the right one for you. I would suggest still changing your plan during the Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) and if for whatever reason you don’t like the plan you switched to on January 1, you can still shop and find a new plan to start as late as April 1st.
Call or email My Medicare Hotline today to make sure you shop all of the plans in your area. Your doctors will be checked to ensure they are accepted and we will verify that your medications are covered.
